Recap of the 7th Annual "A Night at the Oscars" in Holmes County
On Thursday, May 2, 2024, the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Mississippi Delta hosted its 7th Annual "A Night at the Oscars" event at the Lexington Multipurpose Building Complex. The evening was an inspiring gathering of community members, leaders, and honorees who came together under the theme "Working Together for a Better Holmes County." With an admission of $25, guests enjoyed a night filled with recognition, gratitude, and a shared commitment to the growth and development of Holmes County.
Powerful Words from Our Guest Speaker: Akillie Malone Oliver
The highlight of the evening was a keynote speech from Akillie Malone Oliver, the first African-American and female District Attorney elected to serve the Twenty-First Circuit Court District of Mississippi. As a trailblazer in both law and leadership, she shared her incredible journey and inspired attendees with her message of perseverance, dedication, and the importance of community involvement.
Malone Oliver, who handles high-profile criminal cases ranging from grand larceny to capital murder, emphasized the importance of working together to build a safer, stronger Holmes County. Her personal story, beginning as a proud 1995 graduate of William Sullivan High School and a state basketball champion, and continuing through her success at Alcorn State University and the University of Mississippi School of Law, served as a beacon of hope for young people in the community. She encouraged all in attendance to trust in God's guidance, citing Proverbs 3:5-6 as a guiding scripture in her life and career.
